What to Expect in Your First In-Person Somatic Therapy Session in Melbourne

Warm and welcoming somatic therapy room in Melbourne where clients can feel safe during their first in-person session.

Booking your first somatic session can stir up a quiet nervousness, and if it has for you, that's a completely understandable response, not a problem. You might be wondering what you'll be asked to do, whether you'll have to relive painful things, or whether this body-based work is even for you. So here's an honest look at what actually happens, so your system has a little less unknown to brace against.

We go at your pace, always

The single most important thing to know is that nothing is forced. Somatic work only helps when your nervous system feels safe enough to participate, so we never barrel toward the hard material. We move slowly, in small amounts, checking in often. If something feels like too much, that's useful information, and we slow right down. You stay in the driver's seat the entire time.

What we actually do

In a first somatic experiencing session, we usually start with a conversation: what's bringing you in, what you're hoping for, and a bit of your history at whatever depth feels okay. There's no pressure to tell the whole story on day one.

From there, I'll often invite you to notice what's happening in your body in the present moment. A sensation, a bit of tension, a shift in your breath. This is the felt sense, and it's the raw material of the work. We're not analysing it. We're gently tracking it, letting your system show us what it's ready to process. You stay fully clothed and present throughout, and you can keep your eyes open the whole time if that feels better.

You won't be made to relive trauma in detail. We work with how the past lives in your body now, in doses small enough to stay manageable.

How you might feel afterwards

People leave a first session feeling all sorts of things: lighter, a little tired, calmer, or sometimes just curious. All of it is normal. Your nervous system has done something new, and it may need a bit of rest to integrate. Going gently with yourself for the rest of the day is a good idea.

The practical details

I offer in-person sessions in Elsternwick, South-East area of Melbourne, at Glo Health, 358/360 Glen Huntly Rd, Elsternwick VIC 3185, 60 minute sessions at a sliding scale. If getting to me in person isn't workable, online sessions are also available across Victoria and Australia.

Is it the right fit?

The honest answer is that fit matters more than any technique. You're looking for a space where your body feels safe enough to soften, and that's something you'll sense more than decide. A first session is partly about the work and partly about finding out whether this feels right for you. There's no obligation beyond showing up and seeing.

If you've been carrying tension, anxiety, or overwhelm that talking hasn't shifted, somatic therapy in Melbourne offers a different doorway, one that works with your body rather than around it. When you're ready, I'd be glad to meet you there.
